On the eve of St. Valentine’s
Mother sends me the Angel of Learning
In a cardboard box.
She’s carved from a willow branch,
Surface raw, stone colored.
The Angel keeps watch
Over drifting daydreaming brain clouds,
Guiding new knowledge through streams
Of flashing television, fluorescent lighting,
Into my draining, waning brain.
At the desk, I wait.
For words, and the patience to prune them.
Radio waves undulate amidst thoughts,
Reverberating against cave walls in my head.
I look up and see the Angel of Learning
Resting quaintly on the desk.
After a moment, the pencil begins to chicken scratch.
