Stuff White People Like

Okay so all these people I know have been watching “The Wire.” I haven’t – even though, according to that totally obnoxious blog “stuff white people like,” I should have been.

I am not usually the type to be offended by that sort of thing, but I find that blog completely offensive – I know, I know, white people probably like being offended – but I have a pet peeve about the way that people – okay white people – like to excuse themselves from being completely unable to deal with race in a real way by making fun of “how white” they are. Gross.

“White people like having black friends”?

That is repulsive. It’s so demeaning. As though every time I’ve ever been friends with a black person it was because of some pathetic white-person attempt to be, what? progressive? Yuck.

Okay here’s the thing – I just realized it! – if “what white people like” was a blog that non-white people liked that would be one thing. The thing that drives me crazy is the way that white people LIKE “stuff white people like”! I don’t know if it’s because people feel so pathetically guilty about their latent racism or what, but choosing to read a blog that is racist against your own race is really pathetic and lame.

I am a white person who does not like white people who like “stuff white people like.”

Also, yeah, go ahead and make fun of people who want to recycle and interact with people of other races. It’s much better not recycle and not interact with people of other races? The implication being that no one, not even these annoying white people, would recycle and interact with people from other races, if they weren’t being so phony. Well that is dumb. Sure, some people hold progressive liberal values for stupid and superficial reasons, but others really believe in them, and its thanks to the people who really believe in them that we even have democracy, so screw “stuff white people like.”

Omg I sound like Eric. It’s happened! I went to New Orleans instead of him and now I am him!!

But why did I sign on here? Oh yeah, because I noticed that all my friends had a little blog flurry, and I wanted to talk about how the guy who wrote “The Wire” is making a new show in New Orleans.  That’s cool. That’s all.
