Get a kitten?

So I've recently decided I need to learn how to sleep next to someone. One of my close friends, who is an avid animal lover, decided my solution was for her to buy me a kitten for my birthday (which is in 10 days). I love cats of all kinds, but i'm not so sure this is a good idea right now. Any other suggestions?
