Definitely keep working on it. You have insight into a side of life that many people never see, and your ability to express it is rare. Hey, if you haven't already, check out the collaboration I did with Rowelle's song "Free Prisoner." It's the first time I've worked with someone musically from the site, and I'm really thankful that she let me work on her song.

This is amazingly powerful. I can't help but feel a tremendous range of emotions while reading it. I've never worked in that industry, and even though there have been tons of TV shows about it, none of them have taken me into the mindset of an EMT like these 436 words. Outstanding work, Will.

I completely agree with the above post.

The Medic

Apr 19, 2008

He was only thirteen the first time he saw a dead body. He loved fire trucks and ambulances from the day he was born. When he was fifteen, his house burned to the ground, and he lost everything he had ever known. When he turned 18 he went to EMT school. At the top of his class he decided to continue on through medic school. At the age of twenty he was a full-time Medic for a Metro service. By the time he turned twenty-five he was working for Air Evac, one of the youngest paramedics in the service, he had over two hundred intubations, three hundred defib's, and he smiled everyday of work. Dark stages rose from the ground the day he started to have nightmares, not about the patients he had saved, only the ones he lost in a horrible way. Since he worked so much his friends were never off when he was, so he was forced to try to find new ones. Not as easy as it seems, he fell deep into depression. He had survived the field for the dreaded seven years, but he couldn't fight the tribulations in his home. He could not find what would make him happy at home. Girlfriends never stuck around, he had no time for a relationship. Sure he had lots of money, but he wasn't concerned with the amount of money he had, he was lonely. Lonely enough that the dark fate of his patients started to look clear and pleasant. He went home on a friday, the rain was falling on his windshield and for every drop of rain a tear fell from his eyes. He arrived at his empty apartment, and just when he was at his loneliest... He prepared for guests. He made a platter of food, from carrots and broccoli to little beef sticks with ranch dressing on the side. He prepared sandwiches for five. He took a shower, and cleaned his bathroom. He made his bed, and mopped his floors. The smell of Pine Sol echoed through the desolate halls of his home. He sat in the wicker chair his mother had given him for his birthday, and lifted the pen from the paper. The smoke ring made a halo around his head, the gun fell to the ground. A paramedic found a note in the bedroom of the station to be at his house around noon for an emergency. Two EMT's, Two Paramedics and the Coroner stepped through the door of his one bedroom apartment. Two EMT's, a Coroner, and three paramedics exited the apartment. One Never returned.
