lwilliams: May 08, 2008 - 03:46 PM PST so are you at the weight hour happy with now? I don't eat fast food (well maybe once a month) and I walk everyday and I've lost, but have stood still at my current weight for a couple months. I need to loose more, and realistically, adding more activity into my life just won't work. There isn't enough time in the day.

what exactly would eating free-range animals do for your health?
i'm not trying to be sarcastic.
Less preservatives, chemicals from a force-fed enviroment. Plus, its more humane for the animals. So why not?

thanks, you brain.

Deanflagel: March 01, 2008 - 01:38 PM PST almost forgot - soda and beer bad. Yes I know, also soda and beer so good. I suspect it's one of God's little jokes.

MattFuller: March 01, 2008 - 10:38 AM PST Another really obvious one: cook for yourself. This way you know what's going in it and in what amount. Stir-frying is a great way to restrict the amount of oil you're getting in your food. You can get a decent wok for about $20 and there are plenty of websites with instructions good enough to get you started.

Lots of people also don't realize how many calories are in liquor. One shot of Jack is about 100 calories, almost the same for a shot of vodka, and of course a lot of folks in their 20s are drinking way more than a shot at a time. Five shots and you've had a quarter of the recommended calories for your day AND that's before the drunk munchies set in.

And - dear god, no - exercise, in some tolerable way. I hate the idea of going to a gym, so I managed to get hold of a treadmill for a good price and it's at least 30 minutes on that every other day at the very least. I try to do it in the mornings within an hour of getting up, but man that's hard. But it's still better to do it later in the day than to not do it at all. Anyhow, all this stuff combined has helped me lose about 40lbs in the last six months. I've only checked the scales twice in that time because as a recovering alcoholic it was more part of an overall plan to get my health back than to specifically lose weight, although it's definitely been great to get back into my old pants.

Deanflagel: March 01, 2008 - 09:56 AM PST In general weight loss takes three forms:
1) large volumes of weight, which really should only be done under doctor's supervision
2) trying to get into (or back into) shape
3) insane model-type behavior

No numbers for any, you just have to judge for yourself, but it's always best to check in with a doctor. That being said, I lost thirty pounds last year in a vain (meant in two ways) attempt to get back to my college weight before turning 39. I didn't do any crazy diets or go to excess, but set a target of losing 1-3 pounds a week over an extended period. A few things I did:
1) stopped eating late - had dinner, maybe a snack, but all eating stopped by 7pm. I started by setting the latest time at 10 and moving it back a half hour every week
2) 4 times a week at least 20 minutes of solid cadio (not including stretch and warm up/cool down - 20 mins with heart rate up)
3) cut out trans fats wherever possible, cut way back on starches, lowered my portions
4) resisted in between meal snacking, and when I did stuck to vegetegable whenever possible
5) found no fat, low calorie substitutes for the things I crave - if you have it in your area, Turkey Hill chocolate marshmellow no fat yogurt is just like the best chocolate ice creaams!
6) lifted weights on days I didn't do cardio, no more than 4 days in any week, with gaps to let muscles rest and recover. Only spend 15-30 minutes doing weights on any one day
7) my cardio and weight regimes were dictated by what interested me. Sometimes running outside to tunes, sometimes inside on the eliptical. I would mix up the lifting depending on what I was feeling working.
A trainer I knew a while back said that most people give up excercise because it's too boring and/or too time consuming. My regiment, becuase I varied i and kept it pretty short, was neither.
Other advice - get rid of the REALLY unhealthy stuff in your house - too much temptation, and don't deny cravings, you have to have some balance - just don't gorge. Also, learn your triggers - if you're, like me, a stress eater it may be as much oral fixation. Get some gum.

BLA: March 01, 2008 - 09:12 AM PST I have to say, a healthy, balanced diet, with as little processed foods as possible, and as much organic and free range as you can find. Make sure that you dont over eat, and combine that with exercise, and you're all set. The body will take care of itself.

Zeroth: March 01, 2008 - 08:30 AM PST Oh, I hear ya. I'm trying to lose weight as well. So now, when I have the time, I walk from the mall, to home, after I've taken a bus from school to the mall. 30 mins walking, it helps. Plus, cut out all pop, even diet pops. I've lost about 6 pounds in 3 weeks doing just those two things.

aschun: March 01, 2008 - 03:54 AM PST just kidding. portion control. run your butt off. and keep lifting weights so you end up not looking like a twig by the end of it. unless that's the image you're trying to attain. lay off red meats. all meats if possible, if not, turkey, tuna, chicken are nice. if you're not going to life weights, at least do crunches and push ups. and of course, if you have tried these things and failed, then that means you need accountability, because pills, starvation, and all that other crap is exactly that--crap.

yes. good luck fatties.

love,
fellow fatty.

MagicCamel: February 27, 2008 - 04:21 PM PST I'm really sorry to be that guy, but honestly, if you want to lose weight just eat right and exercise regularly. It's all calories in, calories out. If you are unhappy with the way your current lifestyle has dictated your weight, then you have to eat less and exercise more. The exercise will help ensure that your body maintains bone and muscle mass, while calorie reduction (and im not talking about ridiculous low--carb or cabbage diets either) will provide less expendable energy, forcing your body to burn up fat stores. Also you want to make sure to stay well hydrated. I am a professional health educator, and if you have more questions feel free to message me and I'll provide more specific answers and other resources.

I would just like to add that when I decided to lose weight, I joined weightwatchers and so far (about 14 months) have lost 70lbs.

Mostly, that's about portion control and re-learning how to eat.

Congrats on 70 lbs thats awesome

does anybody have weight loss stories. like difficulties, and how much u loss from your starting weight. i would really like to hear some stories, see what the road of weight loss holds for me

Just by changing my portion control, and using the weightwatchers points system, I lost 70lbs in 14 months.

And still losing.

Hardest thing I've had to do , because I love to eat. I am an emotional eater, so that means basically if I am happy I eat to celebrate and if I am sad I eat to commiserate. And all the emotional places between also always seem to give a reason to eat something too.

In fact, I would have considered myself something of an eating addict. That means it's not easy at all, and especially around times of year like this when every commercial on TV is for food, and everywhere you go, the season is celebrated with feasts.

All I do every day is wake up and promise to try my best. And most days it works.

JohnnieC: December 30, 2007 - 08:47 AM PST that's funny, my dad quoted that 10,000 steps thing to me just yesterday. His cell phone has a built in pedometer! I think that translates to 3-5 miles for most people, we did a 8 mile hike in steep country yesterday and it came to 21,000. That 10,000 figure is also supposed to ensure your bones stay strong and some other things.
A lot of people at my office take the stairs instead of the elevator, which uses less electricity and gives you 1 minute of cardio for what that is worth.

jacy: December 30, 2007 - 08:45 AM PST Start serving your portions on a salad plate rather than a dinner plate. I was brought up to "Clean my Plate". It is so hard for me to leave anything, even if I'm past hungry.

I think right there you have touched upon another idea that can be very helpful.
I've been blogging my running training, and it can be good motivation. That is for a marathon, though, and no weight loss story.

One thing I'd suggest - we all have heard it, but it's so obvious we forget: Try to get more activity in your normal life. Walk whenever you can. If you want to be serious about it, get a pedometer and check how many steps you make a day. 10,000 is the recommendation for an active lifestyle... it can be surprisingly hard to reach, but it's easy to monitor and even make a game out of it.
