hey i posted a song i wrote today: Break Your Heart I know I am lacking in the piano area but any feedback would be very much appreciated!!
<3
i think a contestant could vote for somebody else, but not for themselves, and maybe it could count as a full vote. of course, if the objective is to win (TO WIN!), then it wouldn't make much sense to vote for anybody else...
and i would like for next month's contest to be a music AND lyrics contest. what is great about this month's contest is that it allows those who may not feel comfortable writing and recording lyrics to participate. i like that a lot. but we could do that in a music contest too, if we allow inter-qL collaboration, with limits...
like franchi$e could submit a song, music and lyrics by franchi$e, and he could help one other person with their submission if they only felt comfortable with the lyrics. this could encourage friendship connections that might not otherwise exist, and the qL voters might have a more concrete work of art to support...
even if we didn't do exactly this, i think it would be fun for each month's contest to follow a different format.
just some thoughts...
Excellent idea Brian. However, I was conversing with Jackie on the phone and she told me it'd be a good idea to come up with a music/lyrics contest for 1SKY. Songs on how to save the planet, encourage other to do so or inform people about the 1SKY movement. Let's jump on it!

One more rule to suggest: Can contestants vote for either themeselves or another artist, but the vote only counting as half a vote?
For instance if I was Brian Bunnel, but felt that Faerial's lyrics (just a hypothetical mind you) deserved to win, can I cast my vote for her. Similarly if I was Franchi$e (and could actually cast a vote other than deciding the winner, but I doubt this is fair) and were also competing instead of being a judge, and being the arrogant bastard that I am, cast a vote for myself would that be possible too?
I think to make this all but fair in this competition, I will gracefully concede from the contest. Since I've come up with the rules and we are lacking in unbiased judges' for the competition I think I will serve this thread better if I am a judge instead of a contestant. Plus which, my entry was late and lyrics are just too golden that it'd be unfair for it to be competing :P lol Anyways, if no one has any objection to this Jackie and I may be the one's picking the winning lyric for the Judge's award, while we leave the QL award to be decided by you all.
Sounds like a plan... we might need one more judge.

So shall we start voting today? I'll visit some people's pages and urge people to vote. Let's hear it for Quarterlife's first monthly 1Sky Lyric Competition. The winner of this competition (still waiting for a lyrical expert to unbiasely judge this contest) will move on to the finals to compete for best musical attachment (be it piano, guitar, sax or rubber band LQL) or we can just as well keep the 1Sky Songwriting Contest open for all to enter.
Also any ideas for next month's lyrical theme?
I've got "Inspirations" or "What inspires us as artists?" theme mulling around my head. How bout ya'll?
OK...so I've managed to read several pages of the thread, but I had to read a page...close it out...log back in read another, etc
There does not seem to be all that many participants. If I were you I think I 'd start a new thread and let particiapants post their own lyrics in full (I am also having trouble following links and contantly get the message FORBIDDEN...others might have the same problem???
Before the community starts voting, the judges could make their choice...then open up the community vote. I don't see any reason for keeping the artists name a secret... this way participants could actively seek votes from others that do not usually take part in the forums and get others involved. By the time the next contest takes place...we might see more action and involvement ( maybe even those interested in producing the winning songs?
Bascially this would provide a Judges Award and a Community Award
I feel so handicapped by the site at present...sorry I do want to help.
It happens to me all the time!!! I get so frustrated it makes me want to learn programming so I can develop a whole new Quarterlife site devoid of forbidden zones. But that's just a pipe dream I guess. Thanks for your participation Jackie. Great suggestions. We haven't found to many participants yet. I'm guessing there are not too many songwriters on Quarterlife. Perhaps I'll drop by my Nextcat community on nextcat.com and see if I can find any in there. I've been promoting Quarterlife in every community I've entered. I've just entered my profile in a Breakdown Services site for actors called www.actorsaccess.com. I put quarterlife on my musician's resume in the hopes that casting directors can see some talent in me and cast me in extra work or maybe even a stand in on a feature film. That'd be swell.

I think starting a new thread is a good idea. That way there are less 'middle men' and we can just post straight away. So Franchi$e, you want to start the thread since you aren't really entering anymore? Also, how many people are known to be competing in this? Since everyone's schedules are different and not everyone always has access to a computer, maybe we should give contestants until friday night to post their lyrics before voting/judging can begin. Again, Franchi$e, you are good at making up rules and such for this stuff so if you start the thread you can make what's up clear to all?

I know I am looking forward to reading everyone's lyrics and getting this show on the road!

Okay Yenta Jackie is on board. She needs to know how many entries we have so far. Also since she cannot access her site correctly, the lyrics will have to be passed onto someone to e-mail to Jackie. Any volunteers. Like I said, I may have to drop out of this competition due to my inability to come up with decent lyrics to submit. I HATE DEADLINES. They make me procrastinate till the last minute and I never got a chance to sit down and write. I did come up with verse and chorus, but they're not even good. So if you guys want, you can pass the lyrics onto me and I'll seed them to Jackie, via e-mail, who will cast her judges vote and send me 3-5 nominees to post on the thread. Then the community can cast their vote by quoting the lyrics and including the word Vote under the quote box. We shall tally these up and determine the community award. Voting will span for the next week. What ya'll think?
So we still haven't heard from Prof. I haven't heard from Jackie, but JHA told me he talked to her about this and she might have time to post the lyrics today, May 8th. If we don't hear from her by 3 in the afternoon (Eastern Time), then we'll go ahead and just post the lyrics ourselves. And if we don't hear anything from prof then I'll be glad to concede and be the judge/moderator of the contest. To be honest I could only come up with a verse and a chorus for the song, but couldn't go any further. Being a slacker, I abhor deadlines and they only deter me from getting anything done
Anyone have any better ideas on how to handle this.
Good Vibes to all,
Franchi$e
i think if everyone posts their own that will be ok... and what better judge is there than ALL OF QL?... let the masses have the final say, i say...

i am all in favor of a contest thread for postings, but do they really need to be anonymous? it seems like it would be way easier if we could just post lyrics ourselves, when we feel ready (before the deadline).
i understand the argument for anonymity and avoiding a "popularity contest," but i guess i trust this community to make judgments based on merit, and to have open enough minds to be surprised, maybe, that somebody they weren't expecting could write the best lyrics.
the voters might have more fun reading and voting if they knew who the lyrics came from...
does anybody agree? disagree?
and i won't start the "101 submission" thread... i will leave that to franchise or the conspicuously absent prof.
hehe, "submission," hehe...
I vote for a submission thread to post our lyrics anonymously. Yay or nay? I'll ask Jackie if she can be our moderator in Prof's absence till he gets back. She'll just post the lyrics for us on the submission thread if she's up for it.
Once the votes have been tallied over the next week we can then reveal who wrote what. Patience is a virtue.

so i just sent him my song too... but he hasn't logged on since april 24th... i'm thinking we may need a submission backup plan... what if he totally forgot about the competition and doens't log on to see all his messages?

* Finished products go to profsignum by Thursday night. *
And it is by Thursday not onThursday, right? As in I can send it in like now so I stop over analyzing it?
Turn in to Prof by Thursday. Meaning cutoff would be 11:59pm (Quarterlife time) Wednesday night. As that would be 7 full days from the start of the contest. How come Profsignum hasn't shown his mug around these parts lately. He does know he's the judge of this competition. Also someone should start a "Contest thread" where the lyrics will be posted, one post for each set of lyrics. Users can then quote their favorite lyric and we shall count that as a vote. Voting will span for one full week only. Tallies added up and most votes wins the "User's choice award" while Prof's personal pick is awarded "Editor's choice award". Good luck to everyone.
