I'm a writer, producer, director, self-hired actor, and now a webmaster old enough to know better and doing it anyway. I've just gone through a huge public humiliation -- the failure of quarterlife on NBC -- and feel remarkably fine about it. Because I know there's a whole community already that understands what we're doing, and whose members, whether they think the show is great or just so-so, still find something to learn and enjoy with each episode. Back when I was young the mainstream critics hated The Graduate and Bonnie and Clyde, too.
There's a moment in the pilot that exemplifies for me what I like about quarterlife: right after Lisa tells off Dylan for blogging about her, Dylan is crying, everyone is standing around embarrassed, and Andy says: "Well, I am never revealing myself to you ever again." It's an ironic moment, off-hand, not punched up with a close-up, and it would never appear on any network show. You either get it or you don't.
