Creativity on demand

I would just like to let everyone out there know that I'm a very creative person. However, I can not always pull something creative out of my rear! Sometimes a problem needs time to marinate.
For example, I was at a friends baby shower and everyone was asked to draw with fabric markers on little baby outfits for the new kiddow. So we all sat down with our little outfits and little markers and played artsy fartsy. I felt as though everyone was expecting a museum quality artwork from me just because I have a freaking fine arts degree. PEOPLE, first of all I'm a sculpture major! Second of all, that's way too much pressure, let me take it home or something if you're expecting greatness.
I've learned that if I'm given a problem that requires a cretaive solution, I need a little time to ponder. To let the problem saturate my thoughts and to let the subconscience take over. To marinate, if you will. Sometimes this happens quickly, other times I need to sleep on it.
Or maybe I'm simply not a baby shower type girl.

This is similar to when someone asks me to repeat a joke that I made a few nights before...people will ask you to repeat it thinking that its a slot machine that always pays off and that they can just pull the lever and out comes the money...but part of being someone with a creative center is knowing that sometimes you pull the lever and it doesnt pay every time...

Rebecca, I know just what you mean. I did a solo show recently under a very tight deadline and more than half the works came out shit. Never again will I do something like that. I need time to live with a piece, and work it over a period of time. Work for hire has always been difficult for me simply because of deadline pressure. Don't get me wrong, I'm very fast when it comes time to actually executing something, I just think about them for a long time first.
