Hmm

Jan 15, 2008 - 20:25 PM PST

Ever since I was little, I thought i would grow up to be a vet. Boy, did i think wrong. I suck at science and I hate it. I would not enjoy becoming a vet.
On the otherhand, however, i looooove english, with a passion. I love to edit, I love to write, I love grammer, I love literature, I love to read. For a long time I wanted to become an editor for a fashion magazine. I know i would enjoy that.
But I also enjoy taking pictures and photography. I love that. I might to be so good. But more than anything I would love to travel as a nature and still life photographer. That would be amazing. I'd get to experience different cultures and view all the small things in life.
But I also like to help people, and would like to pursue something in conseling.

I'm torn. I have many opportunities and possiblities, but I don't want to make an incorrect choice, concidering this will affect the rest of my life. I don't want to screw this up. There is many things I enjoy, but I need to make a living.

Any suggestions on what to do in my predictament?

I was thinking the exact thing that DevilMayCare suggested. You could dabble your hands in photojournalism. I'm not sure how popular of a major that is for college but I know that mine has a regular journalism major and a few photojournalism classes. I'm an English major and I'll give you the same advice that all my professors have given to me and my classmates: start small. It's nice to dream big (who doesn't now-a-days?) but your chances of getting work accepted, and even published, grow DRAMATICALLY of you start off in magazines that are new or are local to your area (or maybe another area). Do some research online for local magazines. There are PLENTY out there that are looking for people like you =]

Hope this helped!

Heh...well you do live in a totally dif country (+dif culture) but the "burden" to "make a living" aka money, will haunt you for quite sometime I'm afraid.I wanted to study film so I can be a sort of a film critic.Dad said "and how you gonna make a living till that happens?" :X But,imo the stuff you mentioned are not that far fetched. Well, hmmm, a reporter combines writing and photography.

Well think of it this way. There is no 'incorrect' answer per say to your question. There is a good choice, and then there is a BETTER choice. One may suit your need, the other may suit your want. I'm doing what it is I want right now :) It isn't necessarily what I need, but I'm barely making it. I'm making it work. If I had taken the other path and did what I NEEDED to do, I'd be a miserable misanthrope moping every second of everyday because I hate my job. I love ever minute and second of every chance I get to teach my kids at school, to play a show, to coach a voice lesson, to perform a piano recital, to record a song :) EVERYTHING. I don't regret one bit of it. Go where your heart leads you, and don't look back. That there will be your BETTER decision :)

I love the same things...reading,writing, photography, literature(both english an italian).
We have so many opportunities but, that's right, I don't know what to choose!!!
I love to travel, too. It's so beautiful see what is in the world and meet other people and cultures...
We have some more time to make our choise but I know it's difficult ...

Writer, photographer, editor, world traveler; these don't sound mutually exclusive to me. You know something like a photojournalist for National Geographic.
