He watched, no in a creepy way, he wasn't stalking her. He simply observed her habits. The way she tucked that stray piece of hair behind her ear; and got frustrated when it fell out of place moments later. He noticed her well worn copy of Pride and Prejudice tucked into the front of her backpack, always easy to pull out when she had a few spare moments. He noticed the wistful look in her eyes when her friends spoke of their boyfriends. And he noticed the curve of her neck where his hand would fit so perfectly. Mostly though Mitch noticed how much she needed someone next to her. Someone to support her and hold her hand while she walked so maybe she she wouldn't trip and scrape her perfect skin so often.
Mitch wanted to be that person, but was terrified to ask her to let him in. He liked to keep on the edges. Never really immersing himself into the middle of the action, but enjoying the fun from the sides. He was shy. The few friends he had were true and he didn't desire more than that. Luckily for him, she counted him among her friends. Mitch started interacting more with her. He needed to gain his footing around her.
And then one night he went out for Chinese food with his parents. He had always been a strong believer in fate and fortunes. He was surprised and secretly thrilled at what his cookie revealed: "Flowers would brighten the day of your good friend tomorrow." All the way home he was grinning. He had the perfect excuse to make his first move.
