Profound and Fabulous Mediocrity

Jan 22, 2008 - 08:02 AM PST

I have discovered something recently. I am profoundly mediocre.
I have always been a generalist, pretty good at lots of things, but not superior at any one thing. Being a renaissance woman has it's advantages, and seemed like a really positive thing until a few years ago. Now I have come to know people who are frankly superior at each of the things I am merely good at. I used to write poems, until I met a poet. I was a musician until more musicians came into my life. I was a seamstress until the designers appeared, and a dancer until my college friends started a company. Now I am stuck wondering what I am. If I am not defined by any one thing, does my identity fade into the background?

Nothing wrong with being a generalist. Those people may be superior at things you're only good at, but meanwhile you're good at a bunch of things at which they're totally incompetent. ;)
