The endless

This is all about the Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman on Vertigo/DC. They are comics which have changed my life (and I am sure a few others, always inspirational). The revolve around these 7 entities known as The Endless who inhabit the Dreaming.

"The Endless are merely patterns. The Endless are ideas. The Endless are wave functions. The Endless are repeating motifs. The Endless are echoes of darkness, and nothing more...And even our existences are brief and bounded. None of us will last longer than this version of the Universe."

They, like most families, are a bit dysfunctional. They all have duties, such as Death taking care of the dead, Dream, the lord of dreams, Destiny, who always holds a large book and and within the book is written the entire sum of existence, past, present and future. Destruction, who eventually abandoned his duties as the Endless for his own creative pursuits, Delerium, who appears with two different coloured eyes.She is scatterbrained and easily distracted; she often forgets the thread of her conversations, and comes out with offbeat and seemingly inconsequential observations. Despair, whose voice is little more than a whisper and is very cold and quiet. Desire, who takes on a male or female form, depends on the situation and is the member of the Endless who meddles with humans more than anyone else. These are the 7 Endless.

During the course of it's run, I fell in love with Delirium. Her childlike nature, her scatterbrainedness, but also her intelligence and quick wit, which wasn't easy to see upon first reading. She used to be known as Delight, and bring joy and delight to everyone she met, but some traumatic event happened and she became Delirium. (It is said that she was once engaged to be married, but had her heart broken, thus leading to Delirium.) She has lots of deep knowledge which no one believes, it is said she knows more than even Destiny. "One who knows too much eventually goes insane." She is too cute and wise, and I fell for her.

All this got me to thinking which Endless I relate to more. At times it's all of them. Right now I feel more closely to Destruction, everconstant change. Me leaving Miami is a major change for me and I see myself closer to that right now. An amazing series.



Do live a life of Despair? Dose she have her hook in your heart?

Do you Dream? Dose your life revolve around fantasy, stories, or aspirations and goals?

Do your walk what seems to be a set path in the garden of Destiny, like theres some sort of plan for you?

Or do you roam free hand in hand with Delirium, treating reality like a concept and seeing perception as an ever changing thing?

Are you most familiar with Desire, dose your live revolve arount your wants and whim?

Or are you one of a rare few who are intimate with Death while still filled with life?
