The Needs we don't Know ofDec 07, 2007 - 12:32 PM PST I heard a description of human social interaction that really got in my head and I've been having some trouble dealing with it. The basic concept is that there are these receptors in our brains that feed off of chemical reactions that occur when anything happens to us with regularity. An example: If I brush my teeth 3 times a day, eventually my brain will become so used to this routine that I'll actually subconsciously desire to brush my teeth 3 times a day. Or, for a more realistic comparison, if someone has a history of bad relationships then they are going to subconsciously desire to make all of their relationships bad ones! This applies to basically everything we do or interract with. Someone can be used to having bad luck (i feel that way every time i go to Atlantic City...) and therefore may be causing his/her continual bad luck. And since most of this happens subconsciously it's nearly impossible to track or change. Well then why are you saying all this, you might ask? Well, because it's important for people to understand the value of creative and spontaneous expression. Break the cycle as much as possible! I play music or write poetry when i need to break my chain... (i over-eat or get self-depreciating at times) and running away from it or ignoring it won't work. You need to bring it to the foreground, tell yourself what's wrong, what you have to do, and how you're gonna go about doing it... or else you'll find you're stuck in the same old rut you're always in... Wow this is way too long, luckily no one's reading anyway. Leo C |
