The REAL reason I started blogging todayJan 16, 2008 - 02:18 AM PST As I said before, I've never blogged before. I've never really seen the point. But today I became really upset by my realisation of just how bad the younger years in my school are, and I didn't think it was enough to just share that with my friends. Even if no one reads this, the least it'll do is stop me worrying and allow me to get on with the work I should be doing. Is it just me or have kids started to lose their innocence MUCH earlier than they used to? Or was I just oblivious to it when I was their age? (I was a bit of a loner in Year 7 and 8...) Either way, it's really started to bother me. Today my best friend told me about how she'd discovered some disturbing information about the younger kids at my school. I knew that our Year 9 was a lost cause, but Year 8 is much too young to be having sex. She told me that she was on the bus yesterday and some girl in Year 8 was on the phone, and out of pure boredom she listened in on the conversation. (I do this sometimes too... Just plug my earphones in and turn my music off and I can just discover a whole lot of stuff...) Anyway, the girl was on the phone. It seemed innocent at first. She was just talking about some boy she had a crush on - perfectly innocent and normal, the kind of stuff any girl that young would be talking about. The conversation continued. "What? She f**ked him? But I f**ked him last week!" This girl is in Year 8. This is not the kind of conversation she should be having. I can only hope that they're using that word in a completely different way - or else that she's part of a minority, not a majority. That girl is one year younger than my little sister. After my friend told me that story, I kept looking round at all the tiny Year 7's and 8's and was genuinely upset. They are so small. This is not right. I don't know if it's just our school full of wealthy Thais and spoiled expats (and I'm not excluding myself from that group) or if it's like this everywhere. Or if I've just been ignorant and oblivious to all of this before today and it was going on when I was that young. I'm proud to say that our Year Group (I'm in Year 12 right now - one more year of school after this!!) is pretty nice and innocent in comparison to the rest of the Highschool. And I'm not just saying that. Our Year 9's have been going out drinking - and not just beer - and there has been a drug problem at our school for a while (which has caused an overload of pointless talk sessions and assemblies.) Good. I've got that all out of my system now. I've got an essay due tomorrow which I haven't even started, so I guess I'd better get back to that. |
