This conversation really annoyed the SHIT outta me...

Mar 10, 2008 - 18:17 PM PST

It's really frustrating as a musician and an artist, to try to make money off of your art and still fight for what you believe in as an artist... It is even more frustrating as a musician and an artist to come across someone who does their "art" for completely the wrong reasons. The screenname is obviously changed for privacy reasons.

Me: http://www.youtube.com/user/boyceavenue
dude these guys are crazy good
i think im in love
MusicHater: nice
Me:listen to their timbaland cover apologize... fuckin sweet
MusicHater:cool cool
Me:are u just sayn that or are u actually watchin
MusicHater: eh I'm just sayin it hahah
Me:bitch fuckin watch it
MusicHater: no! haha
MusicHater: I don't know that song anyway
Me: would it kill you to venture out alil bit
MusicHater: I would die a miserable death
Me: wow im sorry you will die so deprived
ur depriving yourself of great music
MusicHater: i know... I suck
Me: ur a musician , you should be listenin to everything you can get ur hands on ...even if you dont like the music itself, thers always somethin you can appreciate about it
MusicHater: eh...I don't really have this refined taste or hunger for music...I actually hate listening to something just cuz it's new or that I haven't heard it before. I'm weird like that
Me: thats a crappy attitude , especially since youre tryin to get into the business
MusicHater: I know right?
Me: y is that
MusicHater: no idea, I just really don't enjoy listening to new stuff simply because I've never heard it...like I never sit around and just listen to music at all. I rarely to never even play my guitar by myself anymore
Me: u need some inspiration my man
MusicHater: yeah probably
Me: u do
MusicHater: I really don't think of myself as a musician actually haha
I have a gnack for writing songs that are catchy, and I have a little bit of performance talent to back it up...that's about it haha
Me: its not like i go searching for new music to listen to , but if a friend is like OMG you should really check out this band , ill give it a listen , you never know what might catch ur ear
Me: thats really odd that ur like all about ur music , yet ur music taste is so limited...y do you DO music , if youre not a music lover?
MusicHater: yeah I'm definitely no connoisseur.....I dunno
i like doing it
Me: ya u like doing it , but theres a diff between having it as a hobby, and using it to try to get somewhere
MusicHater: oh i'm def using it to try to get somewhere
Me: yea i know, thats what im saying ....ur tryin to make a career out of it ....you should surround urself with everything thats floating aroudn out there
MusicHater: eh...
Me: youd be surprised at what could inspire you
ur like dismissing shit before you even give it a chance
MusicHater: see that's the difference between you and I...you're an artist in the truest sense of the word
I just wanna make money off of it, haha
Me: man thats a crappy attitude. Everyone wants to make money off of it,but its important to be doing something for the right reasons
MusicHater: that sounds like a pretty good reason to me haha
look...when it comes down to it...you're gonna get paid when people pay money for you
Me: whatever happened to sense of artistry
MusicHater: that pretty much died with the internet
Me: no way...there are still AMAZING artists out there
MusicHater: yeah...but they aren't making any money haha
you wanna know the real art in the music industry today?
Me: wow someone peed in ur cheerios , lol
MusicHater: being able to package yourself to the masses
nah I just know the reality of the industry
Me: u can still do that and maintain ur beliefs about ur own music...u can still be an artist and do that though
MusicHater: never said you couldn't... I like my sound, I like how I'm writing
Me: im glad u like ur sound, im not sayin change YOUR sound, thats ur sound thats not gonna chance
all im sayin is you should really expand ur musical outlets ....
just listen to whats around u
theres alotta cool shit out there if you just give it a chance thats all
MusicHater: I do....basically this is what I do, I go to a bar to hang out with my buddies
and I see what songs make everyone happy and rock out....see what makes people dance the hardest
and then I take bits and pieces from those songs and make my own
Me:haha i dont know whether to be really annoyed by ur attitude...or take it as a challenge
MusicHater: haha might as well start getting annoyed...cuz you ain't gonna change it haha
Me: im not gonna try to change it , just try to be more openminded
i used to kinda be like u ...like i only listened to what i knew
if youre willing to open ur mind , i would love to show you some stuff that ive been really into lately
maybe hehe
Me: come onnnnnn
MusicHater: but right now I gotta get in the gym
lol
Me: u crack me up
MusicHater: I do what I can
Me: heh

He pissed me so much, I didn't finish the whole thing.

I agree, good music can be found anywhere, for example this cover is amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1SM0kdLoFE
and the original song is eeeh.

I agree with Streetsydepoet, a good musician can be found anywhere, its the one who goes and puts his soul in whatever he is doing, not the guy who's here for money or fame.

I'm with streets on this...that pisses me off. the three of us do TOTALLY different shit but it doesn't mean we can listen and/or learn from one another.

If this were me in your position, and that guy were sitting next to me as opposed to online, and we were physically having this conversation, I think I would have punched him in the face halfway through, not because of the principle (hell, I might do it for that too) but for the simple fact that he had the balls to call himself a musician.
