too know that it ends

Hidden shivers run through the passing gaze
momentary glances all that is allowed
inches must stay miles to protect the heart
Never to touch but to always breath in the inches
longing to be lessened but stretching to keep safe
life in eyes that I cannot own
but renewal I can carry
knowledge of things that can come
all is not lost
if inches and glances are treasures
then my chest is open for the one I can never have
but who's gems are welcome, admired
sustenance for the journey to something of my own
