Untitled Screenplay #1(Connections)

Dec 09, 2007 - 10:15 AM PST

Authors Note:
I wrote this screenplay my Junior year. It was originally called "Palindrome" because the locations went in a pattern similar to a Palindrome. The Senior year, my Junior teacher asked me to re-write it with more scenes so she could use it for her class that year. I added scenes 2, 5, 7 and 9, and re-wrote 3, and 6 so they meshed with the others. So only 1,4, and 8 are original. I think I like this version a lot more than the original.

Scene 1
(2 teens sitting together talking)

Brian: You might be pregnant?! Oh my god I think I am gonna puke.
(Puts head between knees)
How could this happen? We were so careful.

Sandy: I don't know Brian. The condom must have broken or something. But we need to figure out......
(Sandy catches Brian staring blankly at her stomach.)
Brian....BRIAN!

Brian: Oh, sorry. I think my heart just stopped though.
(Chuckle)

Sandy: Funny. Like I was saying, we need to figure out what were gonna do and how to tell our parents.

Brian: Just wait before we tell our parents, because I know your parents will freak. Take the test again, just to be sure. I need to talk to my brother.
(He stands bends over and kisses her)
This could seriously “F” things up for the both of us. I gotta go. Love ya’.

(He kisses her again and leaves)

Sandy: (To herself) Love you too.

Scene 2
(Jeff is sitting on his bed in his dorm reading, with music playing, playing a video game or such)
[There is a knock on the door]
Jeff: Just a sec!
(He walks towards the door stopping at a mirror to look at his face and feel his face to see how the hair is coming in)
[Another knock]
Hold on a goddamn second!
(he opens the door and a woman pushes through closes the door and kisses him)
Well hello there.
(she slaps him)
Awestruck Now what the hell was that for?

Angela: For leaving me in the hallway for so long. If anyone had seen me we could be in a lot of trouble right now Jeff

Jeff: It wasn’t that long and you know it, your just paranoid.

Angela: I am not paranoid! I am just cautious. If someone even glanced at me in a dorm people would start asking questions and I could lose my job and you would finish your education at a mediocre community college or somewhere they don’t speak English.

Jeff: Maybe I should just give you a key. That would make things easier. Then again, you may lose it in all the other students dorm keys you have Professor.

Angela: Please don’t call me that Jeff, it would be like me calling you Mr. Wilkins, just call me Angela like I asked.
(He smiles and pulls her close to him)

Scene 3
(Jeff is asleep on his bed, Angela is leaving. As she heads towards the door she stops and watches him for a few seconds. She opens the door slowly, checks the hallway and sneaks out. Brian walks into his room, picks up the phone and starts dialing. Midway, he hangs up, swears at himself, picks up the phone and dials again. When the phone starts ringing, Jeff sits bolt upright and looks around for Angela. He hears the phone ringing again and gets up to answer it, he trips over a cord and falls, getting up, he picks the phone up and sees its his brother calling)

Brian: Come on Jeff. Pick up the damn phone, pick up the goddamn-
[click as the answering machine starts to pick up]
phone.
[Hi, you’ve reached Jeff Wilkins. I am probably in class right now so give me a buzz later. Later!]
[click as Jeff picks up]

Jeff (Groggily): Hello?

Brian: Jeff, its me. I need to talk to you.

Jeff: Alright bro, just give me a minute to wake up. You got me up from a nice nap. I almost
killed myself trying to get to the friggin phone. (yawning)

Brian (angrily): Well wake the hell up cause I really need your help.

Jeff: Alright, I am listening. Man, you must have really goofed up big time to be so nervous that your yelling at me. Let me guess, you either burned the neighborhood down, you stole a police horse, or you got a girl knocked up.
(Brian cringes on the last)

Brian: Yeah, we think the condom broke.

Scene 4
(Sandy walks out of her bathroom wide eyed and shaky, clutching the pregnancy test box)

Sandy: Well that's it. (Throws box across room)
My life is officially ruined, its over. I will never do anything with my life other than pop out babies.
(Her mother enters, mom goes to talk to Sandy)

Mom: Hi Sandy, how was your day?

Sandy (nervously): It was ok. Mom, what would you do if I got pregnant?

Mom: Well I would stand by you no matter what decision you made. Why?

Sandy: Well one of my friends just found out she is pregnant and she is trying to figure out how to tell her parents. But I bet she will be fine. Goodnight. (Exit)

Mom (Calling after her): Goodnight

Scene 5
(Angela sitting in her office grading papers or such. She stops, reaches for the phone and dials a number)
Angela: I hope she is home from work.
[click as the line picks up]
Betty?! Its Angela.

(Betty {Sandy’s mom} is in the same room as she and Sandy were in)
Betty: Angel! My BFF, how’s it going honey?

Angela: Pretty good. Actually I am kinda scared. I am involved with this new guy and he is great but I-

Betty: What’s wrong? Is he married?

Angela: No! No he’s a ………a student. But he’s not much younger than we are, he is coming back to get his masters and I had him last semester.

Betty: Oh my god no way? This day keeps getting weirder and weirder. My daughter Sandy came up to me after I got home from work today and asked me what I would do if she were pregnant. At first I thought she was joking but then I saw her face and I knew she was seriously asking me. I only hope that she and her boyfriend can figure out what they are going to do.
Scene 6

(Brian is sitting on floor of his room with phone glued to his ear. Jeff sitting on his bed maybe playing a video game.)

Jeff: I honestly don't know what you should do. I got nothing.

Brian: Nothing?! NOTHING?! I have sat here listening to you for the past 2 and a half hours and you have nothing for me? God-damnit Jeff!
(Gets up and slams his fist on a table)

Jeff (angrily): Hey calm the fuck down. Remember, you called me for advise. Don't be giving me crap because I couldn't help you this one time I have my own crap to figure out man. You know what you have to do, you just haven't discovered it yet.

Brian: I am sorry. But Jesus bro. Hasn't this happened to some of your friends?

Jeff: Of course it has. But my friends are idiots. They just run away and hide. But you cant. Your better than that and you know it. Listen, I have to go. I will talk to you later, ok?

Brian: Yeah. Later.
Scene 7
(Jeff is hanging up the phone from talking with his brother. There is a knock on his door and he hurries over, opens it, and Angela walks in.)
Jeff: Wow, your back soon. I don’t have a key for you yet. I have been on the phone for my brother for the past 4 hours. Turns out he knocked up his girlfriend
(he leans in to kiss her)

Angela: Jeff I think we need to talk. I want a relationship at this point in my life. I want to know if you can be the person that I could be with years from now.

Jeff: Your saying you want both of us to risk getting fired and expelled so you can try and complete your life.

Angela: No. There is no risk for either of us. The university across town has been trying to get me over there for months now and I took the job. I no longer work at this college so we cant get in trouble. I am going there whether we continue seeing each other or not. I just want you to know the sacrifice I made so that we could be together. All I want to hear from you is that you want to continue seeing me and we can move forward together.

(She looks at him and he seems deep in thought. She starts to leave and stops when he speaks)

Jeff: I know you aren’t asking much of me but I still need some time to think this out for myself. Come over tomorrow morning around 10. I will have coffee ready.

Scene 8
(Back at the picnic table. Sandy and Brian sitting and talking)

Brian: Sandy you know I love you and would do anything for your happiness right?

Sandy: Yes. I know.

Brian: I love you Sandy. I want to be with you forever. That's why I am doing this.
(Reaches behind him and pulls something out of his back pocket)

Sandy: Brian what are you-

Brian: Sandy I love you with all my heart. This baby might slow us down but we can still do what we planned for the future. This was one of the things I wanted to do.
(Pulls ring out. Sandy draws back)
Will you marry me?
(He sees her reaction and quickly changes his tone)
We don't have to do it now. We can wait until after graduation or until your ready.

Sandy: Brain, this was never in any plan either of us made. I hate to do this, but I am getting an abortion. We both have our entire futures ahead of us and you know this baby is just gonna screw them up. I think the best thing we can do is forget about this thing even happened and move on.
(She gets up, kisses him on the cheek and exits)

Scene 9
(Jeff’s dorm. He is sitting on his bed playing a video game looking intently at the screen. Screams, gunshots, and explosions are coming from the TV)
Jeff: Oh you son of a whore.
[Explosion]
(Knock on door)
Its open!
(Angela walks in and looks at him then the TV)
(Jeff looks up at her then back to his game)
Hey, take a seat. I just gotta kill his guy hiding behind a box.
(She sits and waits patiently)
I always play this game when I need to think because it gets my mind buzzing, how many enemies are behind this corner what weapon should I use for this boss, crap like that. Actually, it doesn’t do a very good job anymore. I have memorized exactly how to beat every person and every boss and where every secret is and a bunch of other stuff like that and it became too easy so I kept on raising the difficulty level again and again and again until I couldn’t anymore, so now I play without trying to lose a certain amount of-
(pause)
Sorry. I am rambling. You are here to see what I have decided about us.

Angela: Yes Jeff I am.

Jeff: Sometimes it’s the game, not the skill you have.

Angela: What does that mean
(He walks over to her and sits next to her on the bed)

Jeff: It means you sometimes have to make things easier to have more fun. That relates to us because with you over there it will make things easier for us to see each other without sneaking around and worrying about getting fired.

Angela: I am glad we’re on the same level. (giggle)

Jeff: Alright, no more video game jokes for you.

(They kiss and the curtain closes)

Just read over it and realized how silly it actually is but I still like it. I tried getting our schools one act play troop to do it but they decided to do something else that actually turned out really badly.

I don't think it really has an ending. There was no serious internal conflict that takes a while to work out before the main characters come around to the right decision. There was the abortion thing, which wasn't too bad. But it seemed too easy for her to decide to have an abortion. Even if you don't believe it kills a life, it does do a lot of physical and emotional damage to the woman's body, which takes more than a day or two to decide. The woman is never the same afterwards.

I did like the mental images used, and especially the video game speech at the end.
